Free Lunch Program
The Free Lunch Program of Marissa's of Marissa's Kitchen is responsible for providing free lunches to school children in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. At present, the main activity of the MK Free Lunch Program is the provision of free lunches, served to the school children of Daanbantayan, of Cebu province in the Philippines. Limitations on funding limit the school feedings to twice in week, Tuesdays and Thursdays
Who enjoy Free Lunch?
There are of over 400 pupils who enjoy the Free Lunch Program at present; 312 from Malingin Elementary School and 128 from Libertad Primary School. The majority of them are children of farmers and fishermen, living at or below the poverty line.
It's Impact...
The Free Lunch Program encourages and motivates the parents to send and keep their children in school thus improving the quality of education among these children. In countries like the Philippines where the majority live in poverty, the most common reasons parents do not send their kids to school is that they can't feed their children. So instead they just send them to work as laborers, to help earn a living for the family at extremely low pay. With the Free Lunch Program, part of the responsibility to feed their children is lifted, making it easier for the parents to cope with the rest of the week. Their children can go to school and concentrate on their studies. The program also helps reduce school dropout rates and improves grades as affirmed by school heads. As an added benefit, the children are safer, not having to walk home at lunchtime. They stay at school and have time to play while under the supervision of the teachers. Many would go home to an empty house because the family must work; sometimes for as little as a dollar or 2 a day.
Expansion Plans
The mission of Marissa's Kitchen is to feed not only the children in Daanbantayan schools but all school children who are struggling to fight hunger; children who can not go to school because of lack of food. MK started feeding 3 times a week, but because of the devaluation of the dollar and the increase cost of rice, they had to reduced the feeding to 2 days a week. By accepting contributions from other caring people, MK will be able to go back to 3 days a week, add more schools and look at the logistics of moving to a 5 day week.
